Abstract

In the acute phase of sudden hearing loss, in patients for whom two weeks of standardized treatment is ineffective or unsatisfactory, or patients for whom the condition has accumulated for more than three weeks, remedial treatment for about 1 week-1 month can be actively pursued to provide an opportunity for hearing recovery. The mainstay of remedial therapy is intratympanic and retro auricular hormone injections. If the disease has progressed beyond 6 weeks and there is still no significant improvement with local hormone injections, the overall efficacy of the treatment can be improved by a combination of Chinese and Western medicine, such as hyperbaric oxygen chambers, acupuncture, and massage (tui na). However, remedial treatments combining Chinese and Western medicine have not been standardized, and attention should be paid to the diagnosis and treatment during the remedial period.
